Concours d'Elegance Amelia Island 2010

Concours d'Elegance is a vintage car show hosted on Amelia Island for 15 years.

On Friday, Fernandina Beach downtown is closed to traffic and a few of the vintage beauties drive through town to great cheers!

This year Richard Petty and Don Garlits opened the show hosted at the Ritz Carlton.

This show combines beauty and brawn, featuring vintgage road cars in pristine condition and fast race cars.

Many are available for purchase at Saturday's car auction.

A great event and a chance for picture taking, then stroll into town and enjoy a fine outdoor lunch!

Amelia Island Garden Show 2010

Here are the photos from the first Amelia Island Garden Show held at Central Park, Fernandina Beach.

Orchids, bonsai and assortment of flowers, herbs ready for planting, organic potting soils and fertilizers and on-site expert advice about "greening" your home, yard and garden gave everyone a chance to ask questions and get hands on gardening lessons!

The produce vendors had something for everybody. Fresh fruits and veggies, vidalia onion relishes, jams, pickles, greens, popcorn, and organic pork such as ham, sausages and BBQ meats.

There was plenty of food available to eat!

The Raptor Experience with a large, red tailed hawk, barn owl and a little 4oz screech owl with tiny pointed ears was adorable and stole the show.

The Butterfly Encounter was great for the little ones. They were offered a stick with some gooey butterfly food and you held it in your hand and the butterflies landed and enjoyed!

We had a great time!

Princeton Reunion on Amelia Island

Amelia Island proved to be a fabulous place for a family or college reunion, special thanks to Unique Rentals of Amelia. Last week, my wife and I hosted a 5-day affair for 24 classmates (Princeton ' 62) and their spouses.

(Celebrants at the Ocean Club for dinner, a few donning their college reunion jackets.)

Unique Rentals housed our celebrants in beautiful oceanfront villas, two and three couples to a villa, near one another and at a remarkably affordable cost. We played golf at Amelia Island Plantation and at nearby TPC Sawgrass; and tennis at Racquet Park on the soft courts of the Plantation. We kayaked the peaceful waters of Loften Creek, biked quiet roads on the Plantation, and shopped in the quaint town of Fernandina Beach.

Clearly, though, the highlights were a dinner cruise aboard the Miss Kaylynn from downtown historic Fernandina out to famous Cumberland Island, with fascinating commentary by Captain Kevin McCarthy about the island's history in its "wilder" heyday; and the day visit to nearby White Oak Plantation, a magical animal species conservation preserve on 7000 pristine acres with 11 miles on the St. Mary's River separating Florida and Georgia, which is unlike anything in the world.

Dinners were fabulous, on the Plantation and off, relatively inexpensive, and very easy to arrange on Amelia which knows how to cater to visitors. Guests said they'll miss our beautiful island and beaches and pledged to return, either for an extended vacation or perhaps to buy Amelia Island real estate!

This weekend Amelia Island hosts the Florida/Georgia Gator Bowl. This college rivalry which is hotly contested every year turns Amelia into orange & blue or red & black colors everywhere you turn.

Hi Friends,

What a great time I had this morning! Walking along just before sunrise I discovered a little loggerhead trying to make it to the surf.

I picked him up and waded in knee deep and set him free.....turning around I saw 2 women up on the beach and they were on their way down with a bucket-full of baby turtles but they had socks and sneakers on.

I offered to bring the babies into the surf.........What a blast!! The ladies were from the Amelia Island Seaturtle Watch and an army of red ants had attacked the nest. The babies were just about ready to break out and head for the sea so they decided to give them a helping hand!

46th Annual Isle of Eight Flags Shrimp Festival

Welcome back to our blog, where we share stories about Amelia Island. This past weekend we marked the 46th Annual Isle of Eight Flags Shrimp Festival.

Fernandina Beach is the birthplace of the modern shrimping industry. The festival included a kick-off parade, pirates invaded downtown Fernandina on Friday evening and there was a fireworks display over the water.

Saturday morning on Centre Street began the fine arts and crafts show from national artists on display and for sale.

Antiques are located on the side roads. Regional and local music bands entertain day and night. Wonderful shrimp and seafood dishes abound with my personal favorite "shrimp pie". There are many family activities.

May 1st, 2nd, and 3rd were even bigger and better than ever with Fine Arts & Crafts, Antiques & Collectibles, Southwest Airlines Kids Korner and Live Entertainment from two stages!

The Isle of Eight Flags Shrimp Festival includes dozens of food booths featuring scrumptious shrimp specialties.

Each year, the Festival is held the first weekend in May in the Historic downtown Centre Street business district in Fernandina Beach on Amelia Island, Florida. This year, it all kicked off with the Pirate Parade Thursday, April 30th.

Beached Whale on Amelia Island

Greetings from Amelia Island, Florida, this is Mariann Dahl from Unique Realty of Amelia. Thanks alot for stopping by the last couple of weeks to look at some of our beautiful Amelia Island real estate properties for sale.

I wanted to share this story with you. My husband and I came home the other day after playing tennis at Amelia Island Plantation and our neighbor excitedly explained there was a Humpback whale washed up on the beach. We were sad to hear the news but excited to be able to see such an incredible creature up close!

It was a juvenile weighing between 1-2 tons and over 25 feet long! No one knows what happened as yet, but Humpback whales reach their mature length of 53 feet or more around age 12. The whale will be analyzed for any abnormality and they will take tissue samples for further study back at the lab. We will let you know their findings as soon as we have any new information.

The Salt & Light Speakers' Series of the Amelia Plantation Chapel highlights Christianity's impact on the world and the world's impact on Christianity. This past Sunday we enjoyed the remarks of Ken Jordan, who is involved in a Kairos Prison Ministry at Martin Correctional Institution near Ft. Pierce, Florida. Fifty-one Kairos teams involving 280 inmates (of 1500) are active in prayer groups at the prison. So what sustains Ken in his 12 years of work in this ministry? "I get to see the Creator of the universe change hearts. I get to see hopeless men find hope. See sad and lonely men smile. Man after man will stand up at the closing ceremony and say, I have never experienced love like this before."

Previous Salt & Light speakers have included Dr. Abraham Sarker, who heads Gospel for Muslims based in Dallas, who told of his own miraculous conversion to Christianity; Veeda Javaid, who runs 12 Christian schools in Pakistan, which is 98% Muslim; Kevin and Leah Kadwell, who are part of a ministry to the Dalits in India; Mike and Marty Edwards, who sold their local appliance business and their home, because they heard God's call to minister to a village in Honduras; Woody Lajara, who proclaimed that Christianity survived Castro, and who conducts Christian clinics throughout Cuba; and Diane Hamrick, who runs a ministry in a province outside Nairobi which is home to one million impoverished people.

The Series is open to the public; other church congregations are invited to attend; and there is no charge. Renters on Amelia Island are invited to attend and participate in this educational program.

Sea Turtles Love Amelia Island, You Will Too!

One of our favorite attractions is the Sea Turtle. Florida beaches bear the unique distinction of being home for 90% of all nesting sea turtles in the U.S. Each year, from May through October, loggerhead and green turtles emerge from the surf at night to lay their eggs on the shores of Amelia Island. Left undisturbed, the hatch lings incubate for 55 - 60 days before digging out and making their way back into the Atlantic.

There are three documented species of sea turtles on Amelia Island: loggerheads, green turtles and leatherbacks. In 1985, the Amelia Island Sea Turtle Watch (AISTW) was formed to focus on the conservation of the destination's sea turtle populations.
